Myanmar reiterates drafting of new state constitution

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Myanmar Government spokesman Monday reiterated that the country will draft a new state constitution in accordance with the detailed basic principles already adopted in the national convention to push the process of the government's seven-step roadmap.Meeting with the press in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw, Chairman of the government's Information Committee Brigadier-General Kyaw Hsan said re-discussions on the principles already adopted are not only inappropriate to the present situation but also make the process further complicated.

He said those who were absent from the national convention can take part in the roadmap's following steps of national referendum and general election to express their desire.Myanmar's national convention began in 1993 and concluded on Sept. 3 this year. Throughout the convention, participated by more than 1,000 delegates of eight categories of delegate groups, detailed basic principles under the headings of 15 chapters of a new state constitution were adopted.
Kyaw Hsan said the newly-formed State Constitution Drafting Commission started work on Monday as the third step of the road map to undertake the drafting of a new state constitution in line with the adopted principles. According to the government's roadmap announced in August 2003,the new constitution draft is to be endorsed through a national referendum, then a new general election will follow to produce parliament representatives and form a new democratic government.
Invited by the information committee, foreign diplomats, local and foreign newsmen visited the venue of the state constitution drafting commission and look into the meeting process.
